1. Improper Seating of High Performance V-Belt on Sheave
The incorrect seating of High Performance V-Belt installation is one of the red flags that can cause early damage to your belts. When the seating is too deep, it indicates that the belt section is too small or there is a worn sheave. When the seating is too high, the belt section may be too big.
2. Watch Out For Its Tension
During multiple belt application, having a big difference in the tension of each belt is another early sign of premature belt failure. There is a tension at which belt experiences its optimum service life. Anything above or below its tension results in a decrease in belt life.
3. Seeing Smoke During Operation
If you see burning during the belt drive process, do not panic. Smoking is an indication that there is a slip between the C-belt and sheave due to either a low belt tension or worn sheaves. When sheaves become worn, the sides of the sheave angle start to cup and have a concave appearance and the belt has less area contact with the sheave and slips.

These belts have a high load range working from less than 1 horsepower up to 500 horsepower, and is the only belt operational at fractional horsepower rate and above 1 horsepower
A High Performance V-Belt manufacturer will define the size and shape of the High Performance V-Belt by referring to its code; letters A-E describe measurements of the cross-section and then the size of the belt required in inches.
2. Fractional Horsepower
This belt only operates at a horsepower of less than one. Therefore, it is useful for light loads and slower transmissions. They are often found within washing machines or fans and should never be used for heavy-duty machinery as they will snap and cause damage to the overall system.
Unlike the classical High Performance V-Belts, the fractional horsepower (FHP) belts use size prefixes ranging from 3V to 8V.
3. Narrow Wedge
The narrow wedge High strength V-Belt has a slightly different shape; it’s height to width ratio is larger and the ‘V’ shape is more defined.
The narrow wedge High Performance V-Belt takes higher speeds and heavier loads than the classical and fractional horsepower High Performance V-Belts; from 1 horsepower, up to 1000 horsepower.
